Superman Returns (or does he?)

Well, let me first say, if you want to read an investigative journalistic review of the movie and what we’re calling “Package-gate 2006″ please see Jello-Queen’s review.

I can’t say that I didn’t find the film enjoyable. It was a good time at the movies. I enjoyed the story even though parts were very predictable. The acting left me feeling nothing towards the characters, which is a big let down. So much so, I didn’t even care when Superman was getting injured nor did I care what the outcome of those events were. Anyway, you should see it in the theatre, it’s too big of a blockbuster not to see in a theatre.

That was a very small mini review of the movie. Now, I want to share with you some of the things that you may miss if you’re not paying attention to the movie. These in no way give away anything about the movie.

  1. During the scene in the basement with the toy trains… the town is named “Smallville” which you can clearly see on a sign during this scene, look for it.
  2. During the news broadcast, they mention Gotham… a nice homage to Batman.
  3. When the boy is in bed in his pajamas, check out what character is on them… I believe (could be wrong) it’s Aquaman.

There may be others that I missed… if you notice anything else, post them in the comments!

Oh! One more thing that annoyed me… James Marsden is in this movie (Cyclops!). My mind kept saying… WHY IS CYCLOPS IN THIS MOVIE?!!? Maybe that’s why he was killed off in X-Men: The Last Stand (sorry for that spoiler, but if you haven’t seen X-Men 3 yet, then you deserve it).

And one last thing for today… Our good friend Brandon Routh (Superman) was on ‘One Life to Live’ for one year before he was fired. See his picture below along with his replacement for the same character on that Soap. Ha!! To me, this says he was so bad on the Soap that they didn’t really care that the replacement didn’t really look like him. You make your own call.

Holy observant batman! The only thing I noticed from that list was the pjs and bedsheets of the kid’s room.

And you are right, the ending wasn’t all that great….I guess I just liked the scene that occurred at Lois’ house that tied in the old movies to the new one. Maybe the movie tricked me into liking it by depriving me of any emotional material for the entirety of the film and then giving me a little bit at the end.

And about Cyclops – I actually sat there thinking that he would have made a good Superman instead of Routh (I never remember Cyclops real name so I didn’t know he’d be in the movie – when I see James Marsders I always think it’s going to be Spike from Buffy and I get excited for no reason) and then I saw him playing the husband role and it really freaked me out. Just like Halle Berry being Storm and Cat Woman. Seriosly you guys, get a new thing! You can’t be in two different superhero movies, it’s just too confusing!
