Naming Rights…

Well, the big news yesterday here in Phoenix was the fact that the Morton family wants to be in on the naming rights of the new Cardinals Stadium. The Morton family, responsible for the creation of the Hard Rock Cafe, Morton’s Steak House and the Pink Taco restaurants has put forth a suggestion of what they would like to name the stadium if they win those naming rights. See the image below for one of their suggestions:

Update:

Some people are now saying that the Morton’s offer of $30 million over 10 years is too cheap for the naming rights to an NFL stadium. Let’s take a look at the numbers for the other stadiums/arenas in the Phoenix Metro Area…

Chase Field: $66 million over 30 years… that’s $2.2 million per year.

US Airways Center: $26 million over 30 years… that’s $866,666.67 per year.

That is an underestimate based on the fact that there is always going to be a huge college bowl game there, a National Title Game every 4 years a SuperBowl ever 6 years and NCAA March Madness regional games. It is the only venue in the state worth at least 5 mil a year in nameing rights.

Chase field World Series in the past 10 years: 1
US Airways Center NBA Finals in the past 10 Years:0

Valid points. Except, I’m going to discount the impact of the Bowl game at Cardinals Stadium since you hardly ever hear where those games are played at vs. who’s sponsoring the game (Tostitos).

US Airways Center has been in the spotlight the past 3 NBA seasons with the Suns making it very deep into the NBA Playoffs.

The highest per year naming deal out there is Reliant Stadium for the Houston Texans at $10M a year.
