These past few days have been challenging. A new puppy is a lot of work and, as I have found, can be very trying at times. I’ve found myself taking out my frustrations on other people (sorry Mike!!!).
Some people say that getting a new puppy is like getting kid. When things are going well, things are awesome! When things are going bad, they can be really, really bad.
Anyway, I’m going to try and relax. I’m going to try to not take everything so seriously. I’m going to try and go with the flow. I will enjoy my new dog and the new adventures that I am bound to have with her.
Anyone out there that’s gone through the same thing? Tips??
I kind of relate this entire thing to diabetes management. Especially the “when it’s good…” adage.
When we “fail” with her, it’s especially frustrating to hear criticism from others. Same as when my blood sugar is high.
We can do it.
Y’all can totally do it. If I can go from zero to stepmom of three, you guys can totally take on a puppy. Funny though, because I train puppies and small children in similar ways…and consistency is key with both populations. ;)
…but what is her name?
I’ve made all the mistakes, so …
Set ground rules. Keep your expectations consistent and realistic.
Remember that when the pup does something you don’t want, it’s most likely not intentional (unless it’s separation anxiety). It’s just being a puppy. Getting mad makes it worse.
There are things in your home that will be destroyed. Decide which is more important – the things, or the dog.
Praise like crazy when it does what you want it to do! A small treat, an enthusiastic “Good dog!” and a little love are what they live for.
Much better to praise the good things than to punish the bad things. We all respond better to positive than negative.
Good luck!!! The pup’s adorable. Have you picked a name yet?
Oh the joys of pet ownership!
I have faith in you cousin. Just think, if you have been able to put up with me and all of my insanity these past years, a puppy is a walk in the park.
