A New Podcast

I’ve found a new podcast that is slowly becoming one of my favorites.  It is called Stuff You Missed in History Class and each episode is a different subject.  The hosts do a good job of making history amusing and interesting.  It appears that most of the information they talk about are the small details that would have taken too much time to get into during a regular high school history class.  Anyway, I recommend you check it out.  They have many different subjects already published in iTunes.  Find one that you find interesting and take a listen.

What Some Would Call Lies Saved!

Last night I spent a few hours researching how to recover Mike’s previous posts over at What Some Would Call Lies. After tedious searching and getting no where, I decided that I should try and create a clean backup of the restored database he had. While I was cleaning up the database, I noticed that there was a second entry in the users table. Clearly this was not Mike and it appears that his blog may have been hacked and that is what caused all of his issues. After a few failed attempts at getting the data imported into a working WordPress installation, I finally got it to work! I created a WordPress export of the posts and uploaded them into his blog. Everything moved over successfully and Mike now has his full history of almost 2 years of blogging back! I feel so accomplished!

A Small Work Rant

Okay, these past few weeks at work have been sort of insane. Mostly, it’s been filled with coworkers that have decided to keep their brains at home.

Examples:

We got some new printers on the floor. When these printers need to refilled with paper, you have to make sure that you don’t move the paper adjuster to a size that doesn’t match what you’ve put in. I’ve seen countless coworkers standing an staring at the error message over the past two weeks not knowing what to do. No matter how many times they are told (or how many signs are posted) they just don’t seem to be getting it. Frustrating to say the least!

Another printer situation. If putting paper in tray 4 always causes the printer to jam… Stop putting paper in that tray!!!

Mailing invoices is something we frown on because it costs more than EDI or email. Sometimes we have no choice though. When your manager tells you to mail the invoices, don’t waste 4 hours of my day trying to figure out how to send them EDI when you already know it’s not going to work.

Finally, if a customer hasn’t paid some invoices and you’ve sent them at least 5 times, maybe it is time to pick up the phone and call them! Why are people so afraid of talking on the phone!?

Okay, that’s just a taste of what’s been going on the past few weeks. Hopefully people will get their acts together. I’m not holding my breath.

Twitter and My Blog

I’ve just installed a new plugin that will post to my Twitter account when I update my blog.  This should be helpful for those people who follow me on Twitter but don’t use Google Reader or some other RSS reader to follow my blog.

It’s a new year and I’m trying to be more proactive in my posting here.  So far, I think it’s going well.

A Year on This Blog

It’s been just over a year since I started blogging on a regular basis on this site.  It’s gone by very quickly!  I looked over my posts from the past year and it looks like I made just over 175 for the year.  Not bad.  Maybe I can do better in 2009 (not off to the greatest start!), but I want to make sure that my posts have some sort of substance to them.

Anyway, thank you for reading and I hope you’ll stick with me through 2009 and beyond.

Using Mass Transit

I’ve been using the light rail here in Phoenix whenever I’ve had to go downtown. Parking, in recent months, has become more and more difficult downtown. I end up having to drive 1 mile in the opposite direction of where I’m headed to get to a park and ride lot. I think that it’s worth it though. I don’t have to worry about parking downtown, driving up and down every street looking for a spot. On more than one occasion, I’ve found myself looking fir a place to park downtown for over 30 minutes. Thank goodness for light rail and a park and ride lot close to my house.
