TV – Vacation Catchup – Premiere Week

I chose to go on vacation during Premiere Week for the networks.  Wow.  Not such a good idea.  I’m still catching up as we speak.

Let’s get started, shall we?  First on my list to watch was GLEE.  I was disappointed in the first episode back from their initial episode back in the spring.  The songs seemed very overproduced and the whole show felt disjointed.  I wasn’t sure what the writers were trying to accomplish with this episode.  I was eager to come back and watch the newest episode to see if they had redeemed themselves.  Let me say, they most definitely did.  This last week’s episode was great.  The songs were better.  The performances were better.  The story was better.  I felt like they were actually moving the story forward.  One item that stuck out was the coming out story of Kurt.  In the previous episode, they sort of tackled the whole “coming out to your friends” angle that did a pretty good job of showing that, if you friends are really your friends, they’re not going to care.  It seemed a bit forced and corny though.  This week, when Kurt came out to his dad, the emotions behind the act were portrayed very well.  I think it probably impacted many viewers of this show that have not taken that step yet and I hope that it helped their parents to realize that it doesn’t change anything about their child.  Anyway, I’m super excited about this week’s episode (which airs tonight) because I kind of love Kristin Chenoweth .

Let’s talk ABC.  They have some really interesting sitcoms on their Wednesday night schedule.  The first two shows, Hank and The Middle, I do not watch, but the following two I do.  Modern Family is shaping up to be a pretty funny show.  I wasn’t sure if my expectations were too high but the pilot episode did not disappoint.  If you haven’t seen it, check it out online.  This show is followed up by Cougartown which stars Courtney Cox.  I had no expectations for how funny/awful this show would be.  Turns out, it’s quite amusing.  I’m not sure how long the story can remain fresh but, for now, it’s great.  Courtney Cox brings her crazy Monica personality over from Friends, which I always enjoyed.  I would also suggest you watch the pilot episode online if you didn’t catch it last week.  I’m looking forward to the next episodes of these two shows.

A few more little items.  I am loving the new season of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.  If you don’t know what this show is, find some episodes to watch.  One word… hilarious!  I’m a few episodes behind on Mad Men.  I know! Crazy!  I have to catch up this weekend.  It’s required since so many people talk about it and I hate being spoiled.  Also, this past weekend was the premiere of The Amazing Race.  It’s simply the best reality TV show around.  If you don’t watch, why not?!  I know people who HATE reality TV and love this show.  I’m rooting for the gay brothers at the moment.  I don’t really know the teams so much so it’s hard to really talk about them at this point.

Finally, Survivor.  This season is shaping up to be a doozie!  I can’t say that I like Russell but he’s definitely stirring the pot.  Will the other contestants realize that he’s pulling all the strings and vote him out?  Who knows.  It may be too late for his current tribe.  I don’t think he’ll have the same control when they merge, but we’ll see.  I can’t believe that we had our first expulsion from a Survivor game.  My question is, what do they expect to happen?  When they put in these physical games, of course some people are going to be wrapped up in the moment.  He was dumb for tripping that guy so soon after the entire cast being warned about rough play, but still.  Of course, I do not agree with who was voted off but since Russell is controlling that tribe, I can’t say I was surprised.  I can’t wait for Thursday!

So, what are your thoughts on the season premieres of the new shows and the old favorites?  Anything surprise you?  Is there a show you absolutely love that you think I should watch (chances are, I do)?  Let me know in the comments.

  • Amen, brother, the Amazing Race is absolutely the best reality show on television. Every time I watch it, it makes me wish I was there along with the contestants. Survivor has gotten old for me, I don’t even care anymore. These days anymore, for narrative shows, I only like Lost and The Office.
