A Prairie Home Companion

I have just returned from watching ‘A Prairie Home Companion’ and let me just say it’s an excellent film. There are some very funny parts. The fact that this movie was 80% improv makes it that much more impressive. I highly recommend you see this film, whether in the theater or as a rental. (oh, and listen to it on the radio if you are able, Saturday nights!)

Vegas tomorrow… time to pack.

Superman Returns (or does he?)

Well, let me first say, if you want to read an investigative journalistic review of the movie and what we’re calling “Package-gate 2006″ please see Jello-Queen’s review.

I can’t say that I didn’t find the film enjoyable. It was a good time at the movies. I enjoyed the story even though parts were very predictable. The acting left me feeling nothing towards the characters, which is a big let down. So much so, I didn’t even care when Superman was getting injured nor did I care what the outcome of those events were. Anyway, you should see it in the theatre, it’s too big of a blockbuster not to see in a theatre.

That was a very small mini review of the movie. Now, I want to share with you some of the things that you may miss if you’re not paying attention to the movie. These in no way give away anything about the movie.

  1. During the scene in the basement with the toy trains… the town is named “Smallville” which you can clearly see on a sign during this scene, look for it.
  2. During the news broadcast, they mention Gotham… a nice homage to Batman.
  3. When the boy is in bed in his pajamas, check out what character is on them… I believe (could be wrong) it’s Aquaman.

There may be others that I missed… if you notice anything else, post them in the comments!

Oh! One more thing that annoyed me… James Marsden is in this movie (Cyclops!). My mind kept saying… WHY IS CYCLOPS IN THIS MOVIE?!!? Maybe that’s why he was killed off in X-Men: The Last Stand (sorry for that spoiler, but if you haven’t seen X-Men 3 yet, then you deserve it).

And one last thing for today… Our good friend Brandon Routh (Superman) was on ‘One Life to Live’ for one year before he was fired. See his picture below along with his replacement for the same character on that Soap. Ha!! To me, this says he was so bad on the Soap that they didn’t really care that the replacement didn’t really look like him. You make your own call.

The Story

OK, short and sweet.

See the kitty below? The one a few posts ago? Yeah, I don’t have to worry about finding a name for her again. Why you may ask? Because the lady that put her up for adoption wanted her back. She’s a crazy woman, to tell you the truth. It’s all good. I only had her for 2 weeks and not much of a bond was created. I just think of it this way, now I can go and hunt for another kitty that’s just as good, if not better, than the one I had. To tell you the truth, I’m not sure how soon that will be though. I sort of forgot how much work a pet was. You can imagine the shock when I got the “I want her back” phone call! hahahaha… seriously, it was the strangest call ever!

On another note!

Da Vinci Code – A good movie but VERY SLOW! Ugh, almost fell asleep watching it.

X-Men: The Last Stand is tonight! I’ll have a small review for you all later this weekend!!

Project Runway

Who watches this show?? I watch it religiously. Since I was on vacation, I had 3 episodes saved up and 3 hours of this show was wonderful, watching all of them in a row. It was great. Anyway, Wednesday of this week is the finale. Following the finale is a new show called Top Chef, it looks great. Anyway, just writing a small post about TV.

Tonight is the Academy Awards. I’m watching it but I’m not sure if I’ll enjoy it that much since I’ve only seen 2 of the 5 films nominated for best picture.

Ok, I’ll post my comments about it after the show.

P.S. Going back to TV… Prison Break starts in 2 weeks again. Can’t wait. Unanimous on Fox starts in 2 weeks, can’t wait! The Amazing Race has started again, awesome. More shows starting soon that I will innform you of soon.

Golden Globes

Best Picture – Drama – Brokeback Mountain
Best Picture – Comedy/Musical – Walk the Line
Best Director – Ang Lee – Brokeback Mountain
Best Screenplay – Brokeback Mountain
Best Original Song – Brokeback Mountain
Best Original Score – Memoirs of a Geisha
Best Actress – Drama – Reese Witherspoon – Walk the Line
Best Actor – Drama – Joaquin Phoenix – Walk the Line

So, this being said… the Oscars will come down to two movies – Brokeback Mountain and Walk the Line.

This may be a year where we have best Director and Motion Picture that don’t coincide with best Actress and Actor. It’s going to be quite interesting.

Harry Potter and Other Things

OH MY GOD. $101 Million in the USA and $180 Million world wide? Damn! There hasn’t been a box office this big this whole year. Hollywood should take note… funny, interesting, and excellent films are what bring in the cash, not that crap they keep trying to force feed us. The movie was excellent… definitely the best of the 4 films. It’s awesome to see how the kids have become better actors over time. Truly a well done movie. The editing was excellent and so were the special effects. I can’t really complain about anything that I saw in the film. Well, tonight I’m seeing it again at the IMAX. I’ve never seen a feature film at the IMAX so this will be different. This will be #2 of my 3 or 4 viewings of the film in theaters.

On another note…

I was visiting my favorite site that provides info on the box office results and I was shocked by some of the figures. I knew Titanic was a huge hit but I had no idea that they were able to bring in $1.8 Billion world wide. That’s just pure insanity.

Remember Harry Potter

Ahhh… remembering Harry Potter. Yes, the last film I enjoyed while I was in Canada visiting Stacey. Can you imagine?!? That was sooo freaking long ago. I enjoyed it because it was a helluva lot cheaper seeing it there then here in the States (Canadian money is such a good deal for we Americans). My ticket cost me $9.50 for Thursday night. Isn’t a midnight show technically a “before 6pm” show? Hmmm… maybe I should write a letter!

Anyway, upon reminiscing about my trip to Canada, I am reminded of how I dominated Christine at Air Hockey. Never mind what she seems to remember because I think all that working at blockbuster has messed up her brain.

Yes, Derailed is GREAT. Read Stacy’s entry about it. I agree with her wholeheartedly. That one scene is very DISTURBING but it’s definitely an important part of the whole plot.

Ok, time to get back to work. BTW, I’m only 6 chapters from the end of book 6. I figure I’d better read it before the movie comes out because I’m bound to hear what happens in the book while waiting in line… If I had the ending ruined for me I don’t think I’d ever recover!

Movie Review

I need to update you all on a movie I saw this weekend. It’s called Grizzly Man. Yes, it’s a movie about a guy who goes up to Alaska to live with the Grizzlies… to save them from the big bad humans that, according to him, are just murdering them at an alarming rate. Anyway, this guy is a complete wacko! He’s insane! Some strange chemical imbalance going on there. If you didn’t know (this is not a spoiler, it’s common knowledge) this guy and his girlfriend end up getting eaten by a bear. Hahahaha!! I mean, it’s not funny… ok, yes it is. Once you see this movie you will completely understand why I find it amusing and why I’m laughing at this man’s death. Anyway, if it comes to your city, watch it. It’s great fun, some awesome comedy in this movie… You will cry in this movie… not from sadness, but from laughing at a uncountable number of hilarious events.

Anyway, my review – 4 out of 5 stars for the pure comedic appeal this movie exudes.

Check out the awesome song I’m listening to at work! YEAH!! I love the 80s!

Bewitched

Ok, so I work for Head Penn Racquet Sports. Anyone who hasn’t gone to see Bewitched yet, please do something for me as I do not feel like paying to see the movie again. There’s a scene where Will Farrell’s character is in his hotel room and he goes to the sink area in his bathroom. The counter is covered with all sorts of junk. Please look real hard and make a mental note… is there a canister of Penn Racquetball balls sitting there on the counter? The balls are blue, the canister may contain 2 or 3 balls. If you notice this and can confirm this, please let me know! This person I went to the movie with says they saw them but I was evidently clueless to their existence. Thanks in advance!!!
