Candidates and Gay Issues

I thought this would be a good day to post this article. A week away from Super Tuesday and the day the people of Florida vote (even though the Dems have no delegates at stake in FL). The following quote is from this article about how the current democratic candidates are frustrating some gay activists. An interesting read.

Even as they expect to support whichever Democrat gets the presidential nomination, many activists are disappointed that the three leading contenders rarely mention gay-rights topics unless responding to a question.

“They don’t want to broach civil unions, marriage, equalizing benefits for same-sex couples,” said Jennifer Chrisler, head of the Family Equality Council, which supports gay and lesbian families. “The vast majority of politicians don’t lead, they follow.”

There are other frustrations as well. Activists were dismayed that the Democratic-led Congress failed to approve two much-anticipated bills late last year – one defining anti-gay assaults as a federal hate crime, the other prohibiting anti-gay job discrimination.

We don’t need four more years of this:

Choose Life – License Plate Gets Green Light

Well, Arizona was in the news today because of a stupid statute on the books that allows anything and everything to be put on a license plate as long as it meets a very small list of requirements. Not only does it allow for crazy law suits like the one listed in the story linked below but it also allows for a plethora of crazy looking license plates to be created and used throughout Arizona. I think it’s pretty dumb, but what do I know?

Except follows from the 9th Circuit Appeals Court:

The License Plate Commission “clearly denied the application based on the nature of the message,” Judge Richard Tallman said in the court opinion.

He said the commission’s job was limited to deciding whether groups meet the legal guidelines for specialty plates. That means deciding whether the sponsoring organization serves the community, is not “offensive or discriminatory in its purpose,” and does not promote a religious message, Tallman said.

The Life Coalition met those criteria by providing evidence of its community and charitable work, Tallman said.

Full story here.

What ever happened to having a standard license plate for everyone in the state to use? At least this one looks more like the standard plate than some of the crazy ones we have here in AZ. Let’s just hope the commission learned their lesson. AZ doesn’t have the $$ to spend on lawyers!

State of the State 2008

I’ve posted the link to the PDF version of Governor Napolitano’s 2008 State of the State Address given to the Arizona Legislature on January 14, 2008.

State of the State 2008

In my opinion, it’s probably one of the best she’s ever given.  Janet’s got two more years to make AZ a better place to live and I think she can do it.

Red State Dems backing Obama

Rick Moran

Given all the political baggage that comes with Hillary Clinton, many Democratic heavy hitters in states that historically go Republican in presidential elections have come out recently for Barack Obama. The feeling is, he is eminently more electable in GOP strongholds than the polarizing figure of Hillary Clinton:

Creating Habits+

What is the rule of thumb when it comes to creating habits? Is it that you have to do the same thing for 2 weeks, consistently, and then it’s a habit? I think I read something about that somewhere a while back. Anyway, I have successfully trained myself to use the parking break every time in my car. Now it feels like I’m doing something wrong when I don’t. I need to create the same sort of habit when it comes to blogging. So far, I’m off to a great start! Let’s see if I can make a habit out of this… the test begins!

Ok, I didn’t want this post to be all about me just starting a new habit. So, here’s some very interesting reading for you people out there. It’s not long… but very informative. Pass it along to all your friends who believe Global Warming is good science and human induced!

Voting and other things…

So, I got my new voter registration card today. They’ve done us all a favor (since now you have to provide your card as well as ID when going to vote) by making the cards out of this laminated paper type material. These will definitely last longer than the older paper versions. It says here that I registered to vote on 8/10/1999. I wonder why I waited so long after my 18th Birthday to register?

On a different subject. I get Proctor & Gamble coupons in the mail every once in a while. What’s interesting to note about them is that they are in both English and Spanish. Now, that’s not really something that is strange to see here in AZ but what I find strange about them is that the Spanish is more prevalent than the English. Seriously, on some of the coupons it takes me quite some time to actually figure out what the coupon is saying because the English is so small. Oh well. I wonder if people in other parts of the city get this version or if in the more Non-Hispanic areas they get all English versions? Hmmm…

Immigration

Ok, so let me just post a few things about immigration in this country.

The founding fathers had something to say on this subject:

  • George Washington, in a letter to John Adams, stated that immigrants should be absorbed into American life so that “by an intermixture with our people, they, or their descendants, get assimilated to our customs, measures, laws: in a word soon become one people.”
  • Alexander Hamilton wrote in 1802: “The safety of a republic depends essentially on the energy of a common national sentiment; on a uniformity of principles and habits; on the exemption of the citizens from foreign bias, and prejudice; and on that love of country which will almost invariably be found to be closely connected with birth, education, and family.”
  • In a 1790 speech to Congress on the naturalization of immigrants, James Madison stated that America should welcome the immigrant who could assimilate, but exclude the immigrant who could not readily “incorporate himself into our society.”

People will argue that we’re a country of immigrants. Well, maybe back in the 18th century. 85% of the residents of the United States were born here.

People will say “these immigrants do jobs Americans don’t want to do.” – That is utter bullshit. Once you raise the wages of the jobs these illegals are doing you’ll have plenty of Americans looking to get hired to do the jobs. In no major occupation are immigrants the majority workforce. Some stats…

Poor immigrants make up the following percentages of workers: (according to the Pew Hispanic Center)

36% of all insulation workers
28% of all drywall workers
20% of all cooks

These are all jobs that are supposedly only done by poor immigrants because Americans “don’t want to do these jobs”. Well, if Americans aren’t filling in the rest of these work force percentages then who is??

All I have to say is that all these demonstrations we’ve seen will only bring about one thing, STRICT Immigration reform. The immigrants have just shot themselves in the foot. Good job. I hope it all works out well for you in the end.

Ok, I’m done for now. As most of you know, I’m half Mexican. It may not surprise you that my family on my dad’s side have the same views as I do. Why you may ask? That’s because they all came over legally and have assimilated into American society. In no way does any member of my dad’s family expect someone to speak to them in Spanish or have a piece of official government paperwork be available in Spanish. I am proud of my Mexican heritage and ashamed of the illegals who are showing a great lack of respect for a country that has done nothing but GIVEN to them without expecting anything in return.

P.S. I’m not sure how it is in Canada but it’s a Federal Law that any child in the USA must be admitted to a public school no matter their legal status. I ask you, is that fair?
