My Long Lunch

OK, so today I went with the Irish to the English pub for lunch today, to watch England vs. Sweden. All I have to say is WOW! Thank GOD we’ve been there often enough for the owner to recognize us. He motioned us over to an area where there were some unoccupied seats. The most crowded I’ve ever seen the place. I honestly forgot I was in the US for a while. There were so many accents… ha! It was great!! They sang England songs, did some chants, all that good football stuff they do over in Europe. Hopefully I can make it back there on Sunday morning at 7.30 for England’s next game.

Disgrace!

OH, I’M SO PISSED!

The local NBC affiliate pre-empted game 5 of the Stanley Cup Finals for some stupid fire that wasn’t going to harm anyone up in Flagstaff. Almost 2 full hours, almost the first two periods! They put the game on a small split screen so we could watch it but we couldn’t hear the audio and even on my large screen tv, I couldn’t read the score. This would have never happened if it was an NBA, NFL, or MLB playoff game. Oh well, just goes to show you how much hockey doesn’t matter here in Phoenix. I wrote them a letter and here’s their retarded response…

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback regarding 12 News
coverage of the wildfire which threatened homes and forced evacuations
in Flagstaff. As keepers of the public trust, we are obligated to make
sure we are using the license granted to us by the Federal
Communications Commission to warn and inform our viewers who may be in
harm’s way in the case of a public emergency.
You may not be aware of the fact that Channel 12/KPNX’s viewing area
extends far north of Flagstaff, so despite the fire not being in
Phoenix, it was in our viewing area. Therefore, it was our
responsibility to provide live coverage of the event.
We regret that this impacted your viewing experience of a portion of the
NHL game and knowing the importance of the game provided a split screen
and audio option on the secondary audio program.

Many people complain, but few take time to do anything about it. Thank
you for letting us know how we can serve you better. Please know your
feedback is appreciated and will be considered in future programming
decisions.

The best part of that email to me, which also shows me that it’s a form letter, is the “you may not be aware” paragraph. I went to school in Flagstaff for 4 years, of course I know that! I put in my letter to the station that I knew they owened the NBC affiliate up in Flagstaff as well and asked why they couldn’t have just piped it through that station vs making everyone in Phoenix watch the “breaking news”.

Anyway, that’s my rant for today. You know this would have never happened in Canada! The station doors would have been stormed and someone may have died! hahaha.

World Cup

I can’t believe that I haven’t posted more about the World Cup! It’s almost been going on for one full week and hardly a mention of it in my LJ.

Well, it’s been a depressing first showing for the USA in game one. We lost horribly to the Czech Rep (3-0). We play Italy on Saturday and we have to pull out a win or draw to keep our hopes of advancing alive. This should be an interesting game. I hope that we have been motivated after being spanked by the Czechs. We’ll soon find out.

Let’s see, other matches that have been great to watch… France vs. Switzerland – ended in a draw but was very fast paced and quite interesting to watch. One of the best matches I’ve seen so far. Korea vs. Togo – Korea took this 2-1. A very fast paced game and some excellent scoring by the Koreans. They were robbed in 2002 on home soil so I’d like to see them do well this time around. Spain vs. Ukraine – Spain is the silent favorite to win the WC this year. No one is talking about them but after watching today’s game, I can see why people have good feelings about them. It’s not final yet, but Spain leads Ukraine 3-0 in the 64th minute. There’s still plenty of time left, but Ukraine has no hope, in my opinion, the way that Spain is playing now.

These are the teams I hope don’t win the WC this time around:

France, Germany, Brazil, Mexico, and Italy.

Teams I would like to see do well and possibly win:

Australia, England, Spain, Korea, and any team from Africa.

Ok, that’s my first World Cup post. I’ll probably have more as the tournament progresses. If you’re not watching, you really should. I don’t care if you really don’t find football (soccer) to be interesting to watch. There’s something that makes watching national teams play for pride that makes almost any sport more exciting/interesting to watch. I highly recommned you catch at least a few games on TV. England vs Sweden is coming up soon. I’ll give you a specific date in my next post. This game will be great and I highly recommend it as a ‘first game’ for those of you who are new to watching the sport.

New Keane

The new Keane Album is released in the UK/Europe tomorrow. Thank god for the Internet so I can at least hear this song at home and not just on the radio!

I haven’t heard the other songs on the album, but if they’re anything like this single, I highly recommend you go out and buy it next Tuesday!

Keane – Under the Iron Sea

Oh, one last thing. For some odd reason the Diamondbacks can’t win at home. They haven’t won a home game during this home stand yet. They did great on the road a week ago but now they can’t win at home! WTF? Oh well. Such is the game of baseball.

OH! One more last thing. USA vs Czech Republic tomorrow morning – 11.55 (est)/8.55 (pst) – WATCH IT!! (I will be!)

My Friends, My Life

Ok all, a much anticipated update to my LJ.

I was speaking with jello_queen today about the situation I’m having with one of my friends. I believe I’ve journaled about this before so there is no need for the back story. At this point, i’m almost thinking of changing the name of my journal to “Why are tlvsnjunkie’s friends so crappy?” or “A day in the life of tlvsnjunkie and his crappy ass friends.” Something like that. On to the update!

So, yesterday was the first day of the FIFA World Cup which only comes around every 4 years. I am a soccer addict when the World Cup rolls around. The games are way more exciting than what I normally get to see on TV here in the states. As you probably know, I am a huge sports fan. I can stand to watch almost any competitive team sport on TV. Now, I get a semi invite to attend river tubing from this friend that has cut me out of their life for the past month or two. I say semi invite because… well… here it is:

If you don’t go out tonight and binge, I’m going tubing in the morning, early.

Yup, that was it. So, I take that to mean that he wants to hang out, wants me to go tubing with him tomorrow morning. I respond to this with a “how early is early” and get the response “7.30 or so.” I get this email at about 10am and I seriously consider the offer (or lack there of). I come to the conclusion that I’d rather sleep in since I only get 2 of these wonderful sleep in days a week. I decide to hold off replying stating that I’m not going to make it until I’m absolutely positive that I don’t want to go. Towards the end of the day, I am talking with the guy from Austria that works at our office. I tell him how excited I am about the England game the next day. I mention how I’m glad it’s in the afternoon to which he corrects me by saying “Oh no! The England game is at 6am here!” CRAP. So that settles it in my mind, I can’t go with this guy because I have to watch the game at 6am! At 4.30pm on Friday I send my friend an email telling him the following:

I won’t be able to make tubing tomorrow. Maybe next time though!

I get a response to this email that equates me to another mutual friend we have who is always “mysterious” with her plans and never tells us anything about what she does when she declines our invites. I figure, ok, that’s cool. He’s just trying to be funny. It’s all good.

FAST FORWARD TO SATURDAY

This friend returns from his trip to the river and gets on AIM and messages me the following:

Him> why didn’t you respond to my email?
me> I’m not sure what sort of response you’re looking for?
Him> Is that the sort of communication you’d expect to come from me? Would you be ok with that?
me> I’m not sure what you mean? You didn’t ask a question in that email so I’m not sure what I’m supposed to respond to. If you want to know what plans I had that kept me from tubing, you can ask. The email you sent stated an opinion you had of me, which is cool.
Him> Thanks for reminding me why I hate talking to you, I had temporarily forgotten.
me> ok.
me> I’m glad I coudl help.
me> Since you seem to need to know what my plans were that kept me from tubing, they were watching England vs Paraguay at 6am on ABC.
(10 mins later)
Him> wow, that’s even worse than I imagined – was that not scheduled at 11 yesterday?
Him> or were you waiting for something better to come long and that was the best thing you could come up with
“Him” signed off at Sat Jun 10 14:30:38 2006.

So, as you can see, he signed off before I could respond. Anyway, I discussed it with jello_queen and she tells me that it seems as though he believes that I was trying to make an excuse not to hang out with him. So, going on the advice of others, I send an email response to this IM message that states the following:

I was not trying to find an excuse not to hang out with you, I just found out late in the day tht the England game was on at 6am vs the afternoon start time that I had assumed it was going to be.

That’s where it stands.

See! My friends are totally awesome. I’ll keep you posted on the situation, if I get any sort of response to my email, you’ll find out about it here. I really am planning on posting the drama on this site because I find it amusing.

Until later people!

LET’S GO OILERS!!

Suns Win!

Whew!! Ok, so we are now in the Western Conference Finals. Game 7 against LA Clippers was stressful, but a pretty solid win. Game 1, tonight, against the Dallas Mavericks was FREAKING INSANE! My heart stopped a few times tonight. I jumped up and hit my hand on the living room ceiling fan, it’s still throbbing… yes, the game injured me and probably took a few years off the end of my life! Suns Win! Suns Win! 1-0 Suns in a best of 7. Game 2 on Friday, game 3 on Sunday and Game 4 on Tuesday. I will be present at game 3 & 4 and it’s going to be AWESOME!!

Ok, that is all for now. Another post to come tomorrow… that will probably shock some of you… hahaha… the plot thickens!

Tax Time!

I have to get my taxes done this weekend. I’ve made a promise to myself. I hate doing them. I think I may get a refund this year though, so I want to get them done to get the good news! Keep your fingers crossed for me. I’ll report back with the results! Wish me luck.

OH! Went to the Suns game 2 nights ago and watched them Lose to the San Antonio Spurs. Ugh! Not fun, but I was semi drunk, so that made it a bit better! Went to the WBC (world baseball classic) yesterday and watched the USA cream South Africa. Again, semi-drunk, so it was good. hahaha.

WE WON!

Steelers won! YEAH! WOO HOO! ONE FOR THE THUMB BABY!

Anyway, I would have posted earlier but I just now recovered from my hangover… i didn’t think I had that much to drink, until I started taking out the trash and recyclables last night… JESUS!

Anyway, can’t wait for next season. Woo Hoo!!

Super Bowl XL

2 days and counting. I can hardly wait. I’m super nervous though!!

I’m having a few people over to my house on Sunday to watch the game. It’s going to be good times. I told them all that I have limited resources at my house so if they want something more than beer or chips, they need to bring it themselves… sort of a pot luck type of deal? I may also buy something else to eat, but I’m not sure yet. Maybe some “make your own sandwiches” deal or something? If you have any ideas for food stuffs, let me know about them in a comment or email.

Ok, gotta get back to work. I’ve slacked off enough for today!!
