Airport Bad Luck

I was on a business trip yesterday to St. Louis and the conference was over early. I did some quick checking on my phone to see when the next flight out of STL to PHX was on Southwest. I see that the next flight is at 12:35, which is a bonus because it gave me about an hour to get to the airport and switch the original flight (17:25). I get to the airport and head to the counter to switch my flight. BAD NEWS! Since the flight wasn’t late and my later flight wasn’t overbooked, I would have to pay the difference to get on this earlier flight. Granted, my company would be paying the difference but there are limits that you have to keep certain charges under. Sadly, the difference in the flight cost would far exceed the allowable limit. I found myself stuck at the airport until my flight later in the day. How can St. Louis have such a crappy airport? There is literally nothing to do or see here and, since my flight was more than 4 hours away, I was not able to check my bag. I was stuck on the wrong side of security until at least 13:25. The worst thing? The Wi-Fi at STL is not free. WTF. Why do airports not provide this for free for passengers?

Business Trips

Here is my list of things that I enjoy and dislike about business trips. The good stuff first:

  • Making nice with the customer. Most of our customers love us so they are always fun to hang out with. There is usually alcohol involved here as well. Not a bad thing.
  • Dinner on the company. When the company pays, it’s good.
  • A hotel stay in a pretty decent place. Our company treats us well in this regard, no sharing of rooms either, another plus!
  • Visiting the customer location and figuring out how they do business. Getting as much info on how the customer operates is exceedingly helpful in my line of work.
  • Visiting new places. I get to visit new and different cities that I have never visited before.

Now for the bad:

  • Usually short turn around times. I’ve yet to be at a customer location longer than 24 hours. Yikes!
  • Sitting in the airport. Not fun!
  • Visiting crappy places (yeah, I know I said new places could be fun, but sometimes they are hell.).
  • Visiting with the customer – Yeah, again, I know it was in the positive list but sometimes this is also not fun. Sometimes the meet and greet can spill into the wee hours of the morning, making the next day’s business difficult to get through.
  • Time zone changes. I get up at my normal time, fly to the new location, and then have to wait up 2 or 3 hours earlier than I normally wood. Fun? Not so much.

Those are my pros and cons about business travel. I haven’t done much of it but I’ve done enough. I do enjoy the whole experience overall and I wish I was able to do more. Do you have any business travel horror stories? Those are always fun.

From St. Louis

I’m in St. Louis, MO today on business so there is no real post for this morning.  I hope to have something up later today when I get back into town.  I hope everyone is having a great day.  Let me say one thing about business travel, especially when you live in the west… it sucks.  I had to be ready today by 7.30am CDT.  Yeah… that means it’s 5.30am PDT… Yuck.  No late night for me today!

Vacations

The time is approaching when I take my spring vacation from work. Now, my employer gives me 10 vacation days and the ability to carry over that many from the previous year if I have any remaining. I could potentially have 20 days. Anyone who holds on to their vacation days like that is crazy. I don’t think I could survive not having a break from the daily rigors of my job.

When I graduated from college, I took a thirty-nine day trip to Europe with a really good friend. It was probably one of the best things I’ve ever done. The idea behind that trip was that it was most likely going to be a long time before I could have a nice long vacation once I started my life in the “real world.” I figured that I should get in one last hurrah. Well, my first job out of college afforded me more vacation time that I thought I was ever going to get being a new hire. I got 2 weeks up front with the ability to carry over just as many plus every holiday under the sun and some floating holidays thrown in for good measure. That first year I didn’t really use my vacation time to the fullest and only took one week (to visit my friend Stacey in Canada).

My next job, I wasn’t so lucky. I had to beg them to give me 2 weeks up front instead of waiting the standard year before being able to have vacation days. Throw in the fact that we hardly got any holidays, my vacation outlook was bleak. I lucked out in the fact that I had already planned on going to the Olympics in Torino, so that helped me to convince them to give me the days up front. After that trip in February 2006, I made a two fold promise to myself.

I will never take a job that doesn’t give me at least 2 weeks paid vacation up front and I will travel outside of the United States at least once a year.

Kind of an ambitious promise… but, so far, I’m doing really well. When I started this new job back in late 2006, I made my paid vacation time a condition of my employment and then proceeded to plan a trip in March 2007 to Scotland with my cousin. Now it’s 2008 and I have a trip planned to Ireland in just 3 weeks and a trip to Costa Rica in September. I’m doing pretty well.

You’re probably asking yourself, how does he do it? Well, let me just share a small tip on how you save for vacations. I have an account open with ING Direct that I auto deduct a set amount of $$ from my checking account every 2 weeks. I don’t use this cash for anything but travel related expenses. When you ignore an account, you’d be surprised at how quickly the $$ can grow. If you find yourself struggling to come up with the needed funds to take a break from life, give my tip a try. Anyone have other money saving tips?

Reefer Sale

Today my company had a reefer (refrigerated trailer) sale. Basically, a trailer was refused full of produce and the beneficiaries of this refusal are the employees. I normally don’t go to a reefer sale because the product is normally in huge bulk quantities. As a guy living alone, I don’t really have much need for four whole chickens or a family size package of hamburger patties.

Anyway, today the rumor was that it was all produce in normal sized packaging. I had to take a look and it’s a good thing I did. For the low price of $4, I was able to get 10 avocados, a large bunch of bananas, a bag of oranges, and a bag of plums. Not too bad. The bananas are still green as are the avocados. I think they’ll last for at least a week or two. These are the small perks that make my job worth it… sometimes. ;)

Travel for Work

Looks like I’ll be traveling for work (for real this time) during the first full week of April.  I get to visit the great city of St. Louis for a full 24 hours!  How lucky am I!?  Seriously, I fly in on Tuesday night and leave Wednesday afternoon.  Gotta love the travel schedules companies plan for their employees.  I can’t really complain though, at least I get to go.  I’m kind of bummed that there won’t be a home baseball game that week, that would have been great to see since the Cardinals have a new stadium.  Maybe next time I will luck out.

I’m kind of looking forward to the trip because we’re having some major issues with this customer’s receivables and most of it has to do with the specific EDI requirements they’ve recently implemented.  Now, we didn’t do the implementation wrong, but they did give us some new requirements for supplemental invoices that just don’t seem to be going through smoothly.  This conference we’re attending will hopefully answer many questions.

April is a busy month for me full of baseball games, concerts, and my upcoming trip to Ireland.  It’ll be May before I know it!

Jenie’s Spring Gifts

Chicks

My work friend Jenie bought everyone at work “spring gifts” and passed them out on Monday.

She went to Cost Plus and bought the pipe cleaner chicks above and gave them to people at work. Kind of pointless but really kind of cute. I kind of like them. These two are sitting on my computer looking at my while I work. One looks kind of creepy… hmmm.

Firefox Portable

I totally love Firefox portable version. I can now use Firefox while at work without having to install it on the PC. No more shitty IE for me. It’s small enough to fit on a flash drive and it offers up nice security if you need to use a public computer for internet browsing. You can have it save your passwords and then auto log in to your accounts without ever having to type in your secret information successfully getting around any sort of key logger that may be present on the public computer you are using. Anyway, if you’re interested in trying it out for yourself, click here.

The Great E-Mail Cleanup of 2008

Today I read an article from 2006 that was posted on LifeHacker that gave tips on how to keep a clean inbox. Keeping a clean inbox is supposed to keep you motivated and reduces stress. I think it will also help me to keep on top of what really needs my attention. To rank this job in terms of daily email volume, I would say this is #2 out of the 3 jobs I’ve had.

The most work involved in this new email policy that I’m undertaking was going through all the emails in my inbox currently. I had 2,600+ emails just chilling in there. Now, you’re probably thinking, “why didn’t he file those away in folders like normal people do?” Good question. The answer is, I have folders and I do file items away. These were all emails that I couldn’t necessarily file into a specific folder, I didn’t know if I should keep as FYI, or was too lazy to delete.

Anyway, today I spent the whole afternoon going through my emails, deleting and moving them like a crazy person. Now, the only difference between my process and the process stated in the link above was that I have specific customer folders that I must keep separate from all other email. I have those specific ones setup and I use them regularly. Everything else will just go into the Archive folder. Oh, and since my company uses Lotus Notes, I had to name the folders 1-Archive, 1-Follow Up and 1-Hold so they would show up at the top of the folder listing.

Now I have an almost empty inbox and I’m kind of loving it. We’ll see how long it will last. Fingers crossed!

Nerdy Work Post – Lotus Notes

This is going to sound really nerdy but I am super excited because I now have the most up to date version of Lotus Notes (that my work provides) on my computer. It’s been a long time coming! Some of the features that I now have are listed below and these are the ones that I’ve been missing for over a year.

Lotus Notes

In the new version of Lotus Notes, I am able to do the following things:

  • Flag items for follow up (should be standard in all email programs, right?) Along with flagging, I can also see a list of items that need to be followed up on.
  • Assign colors to specific users/email addresses. This allows for greater visibility within the Lotus Notes inbox. Not necessary but handy.
  • View icons that show if the message has been replied. This is something that will save me in the future!

These are the most important features that I was without for over a year at work. I’m surprised I was even able to cope. I used to keep items that I needed to follow up on as unread. Not the best solution, but I made it work.
